Central Pattern Generators for the control of robotic systems

چکیده
Bio-inspired control of motion is an active field of research with many applications in real world tasks. In the case of robotic systems that need to exhibit oscillatory behaviour (i.e. locomotion of snake-type or legged robots), Central Pattern Generators (CPGs) are among the most versatile solutions. These controllers are often based on loosely-coupled oscillators similar to those found in the neural circuits of many animal species, and can be more robust to uncertainty (i.e. external perturbations) than traditional control approaches. This project provides an overview of the state-of-the-art in the field of CPGs, and in particular their applications within robotic systems. The project also tackles the implementation of a CPG-based controller in a small 3D-printed hexapod.

Dynamics, Stability Analysis and Control of a Mammal-Like Octopod Robot Driven by Different Central Pattern Generators
In this paper, we studied numerically both kinematic and dynamic models of a biologically inspired mammal-like octopod robot walking with a tetrapod gait. Three different nonlinear oscillators were used to drive the robot’s legs working as central pattern generators. In addition, also a new, relatively simple and efficient model was proposed and investigated. The introduced model of the gait ge...
متن کاملThe Role of Learning and Kinematic Features in Dexterous Manipulation: a Comparative Study with Two Robotic Hands
Dexterous movements performed by the human hand are by far more sophisticated than those achieved by current humanoid robotic hands and systems used to control them. This work aims at providing a contribution in order to overcome this gap by proposing a bio-inspired control architecture that captures two key elements underlying human dexterity. The first is the progressive development of skilfu...

lobster and the lamprey. Existing implementations of these robots are based on finite state machine based controllers that instantiate a set of finite state machines based on the organizational units of the animal model nervous systems. These state machines include leg or body axis central pattern generators (CPGs) that generate leg movements or undulations, postural pattern generators that con...
متن کاملTowards Bio-inspired Robotic Aircraft: CPG-based Control of Flapping and Gliding Flight
This paper presents experimental micro aerial vehicle (MAV) research with low-frequency flapping and articulated wing gliding. The importance of phase difference control via an abstract mathematical model of central pattern generators (CPGs) is confirmed with a robotic bat on a 3-DOF pendulum platform. An aerodynamic model for the robotic bat based on the complex wing kinematics is presented. C...
متن کاملRoboBat: Dynamics and Control of a Robotic Bat Flapping Flying Testbed
This paper investigates the control of the phase di erence in between three di erent motions of bat ight: pitching, apping, and lead-lag. For active control, a robotic bat test bed capable of simulating di erent wing motions is used to test the control of these wing motions and the phase di erences using central pattern generators (CPG’s). Previous work with the robotic bat is expanded upon by ...
